Peter and Elaine's Christmas Greetings 2008

Canalling: 120 days afloat this year: included Fulbourne towing the butty Angel as she had done during working days 50 years ago: was legged through Braunston tunnel, and it is as scary as it looks on the wings. Less scary but still exhausting was legging through Dudley. Copperkins was under her own power for Standedge, the longest highest deepest tunnel, and Elaine was the first woman to steer through, certainly for 60 years. Two Odyssey trips to Birmingham needed police searches to go past the party conferences. We had tried Horseboating, too

Peter:   Now three years into retirement, still doing Inland Waterways Association meetings, with the occasional chance at an impassioned plea to the assembled masses. Utility room now works, but there’s all those bedrooms to do… Now dip in the Registrar’s Ink to write Ranmoor’s wedding registers. All gives less time to plan the next layer of the post-office rubber-band-ball which is expanding nicely.

Elaine: Not-quite-retired from sewer modelling courses. IWA rally at Wolverhampton this year: IWA Boat club presented its bowl for 17 years of Lavender boating. Tatting, spinning, bobbin lace, and a couple of committees to sit on.

Ringing: Iain’s old computer powers the simulator at Ranmoor: bell noises inside the tower for practice but no noise for the neighbours outside. Umpired 6-hours of Double Bob. Trip to Whitechapel to add two more handbells to the 36. Try this 1250 Original Major:

Talks: National Archive in Kew is an interesting outing for some research on Sir Peter and other canalling luminaries.

Other events: Family gatherings of various sorts during the year: Peter’s 28 cousins give the bigger gathering, though where else might one meet the wife’s father’s brother’s son’s wife’s mother’s sister’s son’s wife?.
