SUGCR 1976 to 1978 President: Canon Felstead
SUGCR Summer Tour 1976 - Eighth Canal Trip

Here are a few photographs from the Cheshire Ring trip: a week starting on Saturday 3rd July 1976 on two seventyfoot narrowboats from Willow Wren Kearns in Middlewich, with the occasional stop for some ringing. Organised by Peter Bickley. It was the year of the drought and plans for an anticlockwise trip had to be replaced with a clockwise version, thus disrupting all the tower organisation at the last moment.

SUGCR Kent Tour 1976

Here are a few photographs from the Autumn 1976 ringing tour to Kent organised by Chris Silver on Saturday/Sunday 16th/17th October 1976. There was a pile of furniture in the hall to make way for sufficient sleeping space on the floor.

SUGCR Lavenham and East Bergholt Ringing Tour 1978

Here are a few photographs from the 1978 tour to Lavenham and East Bergholt on 21st October 1978.

The first part is straightforward: Lavenham are excellent bells. East Bergholt are unique in having the bells in a cage in the churchyard. They are rung by pushing on the lip of the bell, giving the bell a bit of an extra impetus with a handle on the blue headstock as it whizzes by, and then grabbing on the lip again as it comes to balance - resisting and pushing the other way to hunt down, or holding on the balance a while to hunt up.

Like all ringing, it's fine when you get the rhythm of it: until then it's a bad idea to get an arm in the wrong place at the wrong time. And yes, they did let us all have a go under supervision on a single bell. Not everyone did.
