Here are a few photographs from the formal opening on Saturday 9th October 1999 of the Hartley Twelve, the miniring commissioned by SUGCR and installed in the Clubs&Societies Room of the old Students' Union building. Founder-member Margaret Chapman cut the ribbon, and first President Derek Jackson gave an entertaining speech. The Opening was featured on the front page of the Ringing World (issue 4622 of 26 November 1999).

A dinner memorable for ... gosh where to start? Firstly the hotel contrived an impossibly slow and bureaucratic method of ordering wine, where one poor chap sat at a desk taking orders with a vast queue only passingly entertained by some impromptu handbells. Then there was the tableau. And the energy used in propelling those bread rolls from one table to another. And we finished the formal proceedings just in time for the coach to arrive at midnight.
