Peter and Elaine's Christmas Greetings 2018 |
Viewing instructions this year. There are still a few links to a single picture or web resource (see, enjoy, press the back button) and some to an album of 100 pictures or more (either expand the top-right drop-down menu - three vertical dots - then click the "slideshow" option - may need to click on one of the pictures first OR having clicked on the first picture, then navigate through with the right-arrow to the right and middle of the picture. Return with the browser back button) and a few youtube videos: (press the back button to return here). If I have failed to get your best side in any of the pictures, please email and I'll remove you from public view. Enjoy! |
Peter:
More canalling meetings (Inland Waterways Association
trustee
and Canal & River Trust Yorkshire and North East Regional Advisory
Board)
fills time between canal (photo-)trips. Just 52,800 camera-clicks this year
and one new camera to replace the lens trashed on a concrete lockside. Contributed some to
Canalplan,
including
Leeds. More work on
Bellringing Rules
(after 400 years, bellringers need new ones) and we both went to the
Central Council
meeting in
Lancaster
to talk about it, and then some Ringing World
articles. Or try
Raccoon
Minor as a
counterexample
to the sense of these rules. Persuaded into
ringing
eleventh
peal.

Media:
Just the one appearance this year: a Radio Sheffield interview about Ringing at
Ranmoor (starts at 9mins30secs finishes 27mins30secs, and available until end of January).
Home: Still in Crosspool. It's amazing how many visits to the new Sheffield IKEA are needed to fix four new kitchen-cabinet drawers. The car managed 52 days, including one whole week, on the drive without going anywhere. |

Elaine:
Still
Ranmoor
bellringers'
Tower
Captain for that one-last-year, and now chairing the Yorkshire Association of Change Ringers'
Education Commitee
as "Convenor"; ringing the occasional
Quarter Peal
including a special
celebration
of the centenary of
Votes For Women.
Spoke to the International Guild of
Knot Tyers'
symposium. Still editing Inland Waterways Association's
'Milepost' newsletter for one-last-issue. Local
library
volunteering, some early-morning warm-pool
swimming, yoga, and a bit of tatting fills the spare moments. Spinning wheel and drop spindles still gathering dust with the lace pillow.

Canalling: Christmas 2017 had a dayboat at Ellesmere, then in 2018 our 125 days afloat and 1416 miles needed 33 separate trips-from-home, 78 nights away, and 23 different boats to visit the waterway outposts of Gloucester; Sharpness and return1 2 (people); Newcastle; Portsmouth; Pocklington; March; Denver; and return; St Ives; St Neots; and return; IWA's Festival Of Water; and a Fulbourne family; Bedford and return; Judes Ferry; Brandon; Downham Market; Chester; Leeds; York; Banbury (people); Aylesbury; Loughborough; Rugeley; Hampton Court; Braunston (for the Historic Boats); Buckby; Blisworth; Aylesbury; (people); Birmingham Main Line, North, and back-of-the-map; SouthendPier and return; OlympicWaterways; Little Venice; Melbourne; Maidstone. Copperkins' pumpout-tank needed replacement (progress: 2 3 4 5), with significant internal dismantling, and lots of associated pounds. Also boatless trips to water in Hull and Bridlington. |

Ringing:
Sheffield's new-ringers' recruitment was helped by the
national
campaign
to match the number of ringers who died during the Great War. About 18 have
progressed
to
ring
by themselves and another 20 had taster sessions before deciding ringing was not for them; we helped with about 65 extra two-hour training sessions led by Elaine, who awarded
ringing-skills
certificates and
featured in the
Association
of Ringing Teachers'
newsletter
(last page). Attended our 47th consecutive annual
Southampton
University Guild
Dinner,
also
Sheffield
University Gulid
Dinner,
Catherdral
Xmas
Dinner, and tours organised by
Ranmoor
and
Cathedral
ringers, as well as regular Sunday ringing at
Ranmoor,
Cathedral
and
St Marie's.
To celebrate its new name, try 1440 of Plain Treble Bob Minor (XXX.16)*5.XXX.12 called (WH,W)*6 (S halfway and end). |
Iain: joined us for some of the ringing-training sessions and some canalling, and still lives and works in Warrington with some occasional ringing. His duties as Master of the Welsh Colleges' Society of Change Ringers ended in February at the Annual Dinner to which he invited Elaine as Guest Speaker. "Everyone else is busy". "Say nothing rude about the Master". Fun, therefore to take photobook with all these to circulate. |
